The Mission
As a nationally-ranked and highly respected midwestern university, Miami University was founded in 1809 and today is recognized as the 10th oldest public university in the U.S. According to its mission statement, Miami is “deeply committed to student success, builds great student and alumni loyalty, and empowers its students, faculty, and staff to become engaged citizens who use their knowledge and skills with integrity and compassion to improve the future of our global society.”
The Challenge
As with all institutions of higher learning, Miami University relies heavily on growing its foundation through giving as a way to strengthen and expand its offerings and ability to contribute to the greater good. The university needed a proven partner to conduct grant prospect research and provide a tiered list of potential foundation funders that would align with the work being done on campus. Miami would use this research as a strategic springboard to focus the efforts of its team, create new conversations with campus partners, and grow its funding.
The Journey
Miami University partnered with Grants Plus, whose team examined an initial prospect pool of 1,800 funders. After eliminating many hundreds of funders deemed unlikely to yield results, Grants Plus identified 75 strong prospects, including 30 major national funders, based on close alignment with the university’s priorities.
The Results
The Grants Plus team has helped Miami University shift to a more ambitious, coordinated, and focused grant seeking philosophy. The university utilized the extensive research and recommendations provided by Grants Plus, and within six months it gained relationship traction and new funding that represented a five-fold return on its investment in the partnership.
“As we work to elevate foundation relations as a university priority, Grants Plus provided us an invaluable starting point.”
