What can we learn from the Giving USA 2019 Report© about institutional giving and grants? Overall, now is the right time to invest in building a more strategic and ambitious grant seeking effort in order to take advantage of this growing piece of the philanthropy pie.
Highlights from the report:
- Total giving was $428 billion in 2018. Of this, 18% came from foundations and 5% from corporations, meaning institutional giving accounted for nearly a quarter of overall giving.
- Foundation and corporate philanthropy were the only giving types on an upswing. Foundation giving increased by 7.3% and corporate giving by 5.4% in 2018 compared to 2017.
- Close to half of foundation grants came from family foundations, emphasizing an opportunity for organizations to focus on relationship building and storytelling to open these doors.
- The data indicates a changing tide as more individuals shift to give via family foundations and donor-advised funds, opening new routes to funding and different approaches that grant seekers should take.
